PSLE Week 13 Update

IMG_3685This weekend, GG & BB got their PSLE exam booklets. This is a booklet which has the instructions to students taking their PSLE exams this year. In addition, since they are not taking the usual MT (Chinese, Malay, Tamil), they got an additional note for their Hindi exams. Now the exams is very, very real to us 😦

The booklet has things on exam rules and regulations, format, use of dictionaries and scientific calculators. There is also information on what to you if you are unable to take the exam in your own school (basically if you are hospitalised or suffering from some infectious diseases) and the results dates (yikes!) plus the time table (double yikes)

PSLE Week 12 Update

Another uneventful week for us, is this the calm before the storm?

School this week has been filled with Mr. Lee Kwan Yew. The children came with me to pay our tribute at our local CC and then later in the week, the school also took them down to the CC to pay their respects. They didn’t write in the book (imagine 500+ students trying to do that)! What they did was stand in groups in front of the portrait of Mr. Lee and bow down thrice to show their respect.

We’re down the two weeks before the Hindi SA1 and need to get BB & GG upto speed there. Next month will also start the Open Houses in schools which we plan to go to, more on that later.

PSLE Week 11 Update

This week was the March School holiday week – note the emphasis on WAS!!

Poor kids – they had school for three days of the holidays and tuitions the other days 😥

But I think they are slightly better off than the others giving the PSLE exams – a work colleague mentioned that since her son (also a P6 student) does not have to go to school, she has scheduled two tuition lessons per day of the holidays. Others we know are giving up extra curricular activities which take maximum of an hour per week to concentrate on the exam. 

Are we doing too little in comparision?

PSLE Week 10 Updates

Last week both BB & GG had their Parent Teacher Meeting. This time, we had to go to school twice as each had them on different days – because teachers do double duty and we could meet every subject teacher unlike previous times, where we only met the Form Teacher and maybe another teacher who was free. 

We met GG’s teachers first. Her English teacher was actually quite impressed with her grasp of the language. She has been using words in her compositions which are a level or two above her. Her biggest problem however is spelling. That coupled with adding words when she copies sentences and not copying correctly resulted in her losing about 10-12 marks in the test.  For maths and science, she is ok, but not the top in the class. Her maths teacher told me she lacks confidence and needs to practice more. That is the key according to him. He also thought she may be a late bloomer. Her science teacher is quite happy with her and her progress. For science GG needs to work a bit more on her foundations and perfect that so that her process skills become good. 

BB’s teachers from Primary 1 have a common complaint – his handwriting! Now it’s even more critical he writes legible so his paper correctors understand what he is trying to say. For English, his teacher was happy overall, but for the fact that for situational writing, he goes out of point. This is something we will work with him before his exams. Maths and science, he has the same teacher and she does not really have anything to say, except to practice more. He’s a high A, low A*, so now the challenge is to make him a high A* in English, Maths and Science, which should to an extent help with his dismal scores in Hindi

Oh, the NAPFA test I mentioned last week – GG passed and got a silver in her timings overall. BB didn’t pass his standing broad-jump, so not sure if he needs to redo just that or the whole thing.

BB & GG are heavily into the Harry Potter series. They started as very reluctant readers – I had to cajole them to give the series a shot, but now are completely hooked, reading the books multiple times!

I’ve always loved the series and read each book as it came along, and for a very long time, wanted GG & BB to experience the Potter magic with me. But, like I wrote earlier, they didn’t really seem interested. Then last December, at the airport on the way to a family holiday, I bribed GG to try one book. She decided to buy 2 and was instantly hooked. She then went on to buy the other books and it was the turn to bribe BB. 

BB does not like to read anything, unless it pertains to his love – aeronautics! So we used multiple tricks to get him to start reading – bribes, coercion and what have you. Soon he got hooked too and these days, invariably you see both of them with a book from the series in their hands!

They even found the Pottermore site and i have to threaten them to revoke computer privileges if they are on the site instead of studying. Today they even forgot an online class because of this…

I’m not really complaining about this addiction as I’ll welcome a book addict anytime! But hopefully this will not interfere with their studies, what with the PSLE looming ahead of us.
