Tamarind Potato Curry

It’s food time today. I like to cook – the more exotic and different the better! But at the same time, I am incapable of following a recipe exactly as it is written in a book or website – I have to make some changes to it (itchy fingers I guess)!

I used to make a sweet- sour potato curry long time ago, but didn’t exactly remember the ingredients needed or the way to make it. So I decided to turn to my trusty Internet. While surfing I found an Afghani recipe somewhat similar to what I was looking for and as usual meddled with it to make it all mine. The end result was tasty, albeit a bit sour for my taste. The next time I make this, I’ll go a bit more easy on the tamarind. Unfortunately I do not have a photograph for this as it was all eaten up before I thought of blogging about it, but here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:
6 medium sized potatoes, peeled and diced
2 medium sized onions, finely chopped
1 inch piece ginger, peeled and finely chopped
A small piece of jaggary
A small piece of tamarind, (about the size of a marble) soaked in water for 20 minutes and extracted
Salt to taste
1 tsp red chili powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp cumin powder
2 tsp oil (I used an olive-canola blend)
1 tsp cumin seeds
A pinch of turmeric

Heat oil and when it is hot enough, put the cumin seeds in it. When the seeds start sputtering, add in the turmeric powder and stir for a few seconds.

Now add the onions and stir till it becomes slightly translucent. Then put in the Ginger pieces and stir for a few seconds. Now add the potato pieces, chili powder, coriander powder and cumin powder. Stir well and cover, stirring occasionally.

When the potato is about three quarters cooked, add in the tamarind extract, salt and jaggary. Cook covered till the potato is tender and the sauce has thickened to coat the potatoes.

Switch off the gas qnd serve hot garnished with coriander leaves. This was yummy with rotis.

Youth Olympic Games

I’m stumped! I don’t know what to write today. These days because of the Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Singapore for the very first time, getting to work and back is becoming increasingly difficult. The YOG Games Village is located at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). I work at a research institute on campus. Due to security reasons, about half the campus has been cordoned off and now the busstops are only located at about 2-3 locations on campus. This means a good 10-13 minute walk to reach the place to get the bus and sometimes the buses are early and people miss their ride home. Luckily I’ve managed to not miss the bus till date and hope this continues till the 30th when things get back to normal!

Books…Books…Books

Today I decided to start a new page on this blog about the books that I have read. I have always loved books and can’t remember a time when I was without a book. I usually read around 4-6 books on an average per week. This means that I’ve read around 2000 books (give or take a few hundreds) in the last 10 years that I’ve been here. Wow!

When I first came to Singapore around 10 years back, I was amazed by the public library system and totally fell in love with it. For someone like me who needs books as much I need food and air, and who came from a country with no real access to books nearby, this was like something of a revelation! Of course since the time I finished with school, I was a faithful member of both the British Council Library as well as the American Center Library in my hometown. I used to borrow 4 books each (the maximum allowed) for about 3 weeks at a time.

I’m an indiscriminate reader and read all genres with the exception of Science Fiction. For some reason SF is something that has not really appealed to me and believe me I have tried reading them at different points in life to. I love reading historical novels, romances, chick-lit, Asian novelists, travelogues, humor, action, and just about anything in between depending on my mood at the moment. I am also trying to cultivate a love for reading in the doctor (D) and the pilot (P). So far it does look like they like reading, but then reading has stiff competition from the idiot box (television) and the computer/Internet.

Happy Birthday Singapore

Today is Singapore’s 45th birthday. Here’s wishing the country many more prosperous years ahead.

Yesterday a friend of mine (and doctor) invited us to come to her condo to swim. Pilot and doctor had a lovely time with L at the pool. So much so that today also we will be going to swim and miss the National Day Parade on TV.

I’ve been religiously watching the NDP for the ten years that I’ve been in Singapore. Somehow, I’ve always like the pomp and pageantry associated with something like this. I used to love watching the India’s Republic Day Parade as a kid, but unfortunately no one else in my family shared this with me and so I had to miss it more than I saw it. I guess I’m making up for lost opportunities here.

Sunday musings….

OK, before I start really posting, here is something about me and my family. I am a 30 something woman who lives and works in Singapore with S my husband and my almost 7 year old twins, doctor (a girl) and pilot (a boy). The nicks because one wants to be a doctor and the other a pilot. They are in Primary 1 in a school here.

I also have a domestic helper V who has been with me for the past 7 months and about whom I will probably be ranting some times. She started off as being the perfect helper, no attitude, always willing to do what I asked her to do and was a great help when we moved to this new, bigger home some four months back. But in the last few months, she has started slacking on her work, gives me loads of attitude ad if I say something to her, tells me off for doing so.  I am so fed up with her, I am almost sure that I will not renew her contract when it ends in January 2012. In fact, I have decided not to give her a bonus also at the end of the contract and just give her small bonuses for the festival season.
