Secondary 2 Week 34 Update

This is the school holiday week for the children and with just two full days of school, there’s not much to actually update!

On Wednesday, which was celebrated as Teachers Day in Singapore, BB & GG went back to their primary school for homecoming! This is something they did last year too and GG says she will do it all the time. I think it will be till familiar teachers are still in school and when it reaches a point where they don’t know most teachers, they will stop going to homecoming!

GG also got her report card for the term back and it was filled with mostly A grades. She is continuing to do well in school, but I would love her to push herself a bit more. She is hovering at the top, yet not yet there, and I want her to breach that dam and try for top honours.

Today marks the end of the long weekend for us, but the children will continue with their term break. BB has to go back to school one day, but I think GG will be home all days, except for the days she needs to go for tuition!

Secondary 2 Week 33 Update

This was the last full week of school before their term break next week.

Teachers Day is traditionally celebrated on the 1st of September. But this period usually coincides with term break so teachers used to be upset at the loss of a mandate holiday. Then a few years back, the government decided that Teacher’s Day will be celebrated on the last Friday before term break. So the term break got extended by a day. This year that Friday is a public holiday because of Hari Raya Haji or Bakri Id as it’s known in South Asia. So Teacher’s Day is now on the Thursday and the children (and teachers) get an additional day of term break! Schools will celebrate this on Wednesday effectively making just Monday and Tuesday as full and normal school days!

GG’s choir is going to perform the routine they did at the competition last month. She didn’t clear the audition for the duet she was going to sing, but maybe that’s a good thing. I am going to ask her to audition for a solo next year just to see where she stands!

BB had his second flying competition yesterday. He just said it was ok. But before the competition he mentioned that many of the motors his school was using on the planes were faulty, so I wonder if that impacted them in anyway. This is their annual ranking competition and this decides if they can leapfrog a rank next year.

This term break is going to be one where I push them to study as almost immediately they start their end of year exams. A big bummer is that on their birthday is the dreaded Hindi end of year exam. They have been so upset ever since they heard about this!

Have a wonderful Sunday people!

Secondary 2 Week 33 Update

This was a usual week for the children with the usual school, CCA and tuition routine.

GG auditioned for a singing slot with a friend to sing at the school’s Teachers Day celebrations at the end of the month.

BB has also been busy with school and the CCA competition he has at the end of the month.

School ends on 30 August for a week long term break and when term 4 starts, it’s all about exams and streaming options.

Secondary 2 Week 32 Update

This week felt very fractured, especially for the children!

Monday was the festival of Avani Avittam and since I had already secured permission for BB to miss part of the school that day, he was dropped off in school only around noon. So he was in school for just part of the day. Tuesday was the eve of National Day and so there was no lessons that day. Because BB & S went to the temple to pray and do the Gayatri Mantra, he missed school that day (again we had already taken permission and his school told us if it ends late he need not come into school because there would be no lessons). Wednesday and Thursday was holidays because of National Day and the day after for school students and it was only Friday that BB had a full day of school!

GG also had only two full days at school – Monday and Friday because of the same reasons. Yesterday her school had another streaming talk for parents and students. GG had a test in Hindi school, so only I went in to see what this was all about. A couple of days prior to this, I had an interesting discussion with one of the teachers from her school. Since I am part of the parent support group, I was able to speak to this teacher who was the school liaison person. I wanted to see if GG could do some humanities subjects at a higher level if she was not able to get a lateral transfer this year to the higher level. Since the school’s focus in in STEM subjects, unfortunately this is not possible since they don’t even have interesting humanities subjects available. So she has no choice but do the subjects available and then make sure she does well enough at her O levels so that she can enter her subject of choice for her tertiary education.

The term is coming to an end by the end of this month and then term 4 is usually a very short one since they will focus on exams during this term and then it’s the end of Secondary 2 for them. We have to exercise our stream choices sometime in October and results will be out sometime in early to mid-November. I only pray that both GG & BB get their subject choices.

This was a National Day week! Have a blessed Sunday everyone!!

Secondary 2 Week 31 Update

Another week and we are one more week closer to the end of the year!

This was a sort of boring week for both children, so nothing really to update.

GG got back some of the results of her common test and she was the highest in her class for Geography but didn’t do as well as I expected in Science (which is her weakest subject).

Next week is Singapore’s National Day so a school holiday and then a half day before the holiday to celebrate the day in school. So out o f five school days, only three will be about studies!

Have a wonderful Sunday!
