Secondary 2 Week 26 Update

School has started and with this week (the next week too actually) being short school weeks, both the children have gotten immersed into school almost immediately!

GG had a school choir programme (one where their choir teacher was singing) and it was during the week with the next day being another school day. The programme was in the evening from 6-9 pm and by the time S picked her up and came home it was almost 11 pm. GG is someone who goes to bed by 9 pm, so this really took a toll on her the next day.

BB’s week was the usual one with school and CCA.

I am now on my naggy mode with the common tests just a few weeks away and the year-end exams a couple of months away!

Have a blessed Sunday everyone!

Secondary 2 Week 25 Update

School holidays are ending in another day and both children are ready for school. They both say they are quite bored being at home and so school is now welcome!

Preparations for school are in full swing with BB having his haircut yesterday. His natural style is something that I’ve seen guys take time to get right – it’s something that K-pop stars (the guys) have and which young people here try to replicate.

This space will probably become a little more exciting when school starts on Tuesday as the children start getting ready for the year end exams. Term 3 will be roughly two months and term four less than that, so this half of the year will be considerably shorter than the first half!

To all my Muslim readers, Eid Mubarak and to people in my part of the world Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Secondary 2 Week 24 Update

The holidays are still on and there is just a week more before school starts. They get an extra day If holidays this year because the Monday school is supposed to start is the compensation holiday for Hari Raya Puasa or the festival following the period of Ramadan.

Both BB and GG have been at home this week and have been finishing up their school holiday homework. I’ve also been nagging them to get up on speed on the topics they’ve covered so far, but haven’t yet understood.

GG went to a friend’s home on Friday to complete a group assignment. She was supposed to go there on Sunday, but fell sick after our holiday. This Friend is a boy and I was quite concerned that it will be just them in his house to do the project work. So while I was ok for her to go on Sunday since his parents would be at home, I was a bit hesitant in allowing her to go on a weekday. But when her Friend said his grandparents would be home, I was able to rest more easily. As it happened, not only his grandparents, but his mum was also home that day.

People reading this may wonder why I am so paranoid, but this Friend was an unknown quantity and though I’ve met him once, I don’t really know him. On the other hand, if it were friends of the opposite sex (for either of my children) whom I’ve known for a while (like childhood and primary school friends), I would be less hesitant to let them be alone with them.

Secondary 2 Week 23 Update

BB had another science camp this week and this was the only thing that happened this week as we were away for a holiday most of the week.

BB had a great time in the camp, much more than the one he went to last week. They did some cold survival techniques for which they went to snow city. Then did some satellite stuff, including how to download images from a satellite. He loved the cold survival techniques and the satellite stuff they did with the NASA engineer.

I am so glad that he gets to do such things, and we don’t have to pay a single penny because the costs are absorbed by the school and the government.

Secondary 2 Week 22 Update

This was week one of the June school holidays, but both BB & GG had to go to school, though mostly on different days.

BB had a space camp and his Math Olympiad test. The space camp which was a one day camp at the Science Centre was not something he really enjoyed since it focused mainly on the robotics part of space travel. He is not a big fan of robotics, preferring the actual aviation related topics to that, so he did not come home impressed. He has another space camp this week, this one a two-day camp where I am guessing they will also focus on the aviation part of space travel. They are also going to have a NASA engineer to come and talk to the students, so I do know that this is something BB is looking forward to!

The Maths Olympiad test was ok, according to BB. Some of the questions were very easy and some were difficult that he could not even attempt. The other days, he just spent at home, playing on his phone and the laptop, though I did make him do some of his holiday homework and revise some concepts.

GG had English Oral exams on one day. She spent more time travelling to school and back than she did in school that day! This was because her roll number in class is one and this meant that she was out of the exam in 15 minutes! She also had choir practice for three days. Their choir is putting together a villain-themed song and dance routine to a k-pop song. The choir has become an all-girl choir now that the two boys who were there graduated. On the last day, she came home with a crepe bandage on her leg because of the excessive dancing!

This was week one, there are still three more weeks to go and I wonder how this holiday will pan out! Have a wonderful Sunday…..
