Instagram Interludes

Today was one of those days when inspiration just didn’t strike me….

I started and left 3 posts halfway through and could not find the words to finish it, so decided to do a post with hardly any words – a photo post.

Since these days, we have been leaving the house quite early, much before the sun rises, I do take random pictures of sunrises and a few weeks back, I caught an amazing sunset just outside my home – I could not believe the colours which changed in just a few minutes! So today’s Instagram Interlude post is all about Sunrises and Sunsets….

Singapore: The Air-conditioned Nation. Essays on the Politics of Comfort and Control, 1990-2000 – Cherian George

Sharp commentaries on Singapore politics and contemporary issues by former journalist Cherian George compiled in one volume. The book presents a collection of stimulating essays that get to the very heart of the Singapore system and the dynamics shaping it, revealing many of the tensions and contradictions inherent in the “air-conditioned nation” and the factors accounting for the political success of the ruling People’s Action Party.

Recipes: Red Chilli Chutney

I love having chutneys in the house and will have one or more lying around at any point in time.

A couple of weeks back, while making veggie burgers with my Mixed Veg Kofta recipe, I played with this recipe and found one that suits me! Don’t be fooled with the name, though its made from red chillies, it’s not as fiery as the name suggests.

This chutney is made from fresh, largish red chillies which are not spicy. I suspect they will be very nice with red peppers also, though I’ve not yet tried them with them.

Fresh Red Chili Chutney

IMG_5357Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh red chilies, chopped into large chunks
  • 2 onions, chopped into large pieces
  • 10-12 cloves of garlic
  • 1 large handful of raisins, soaked in warm water for a while
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-2 tbsps lemon juice

Method:

  • In a blender, using the water used to soak the raisins, blend all the ingredients except the salt and lemon juice.
  • Use water sparingly to keep the chutney thick.
  • Add salt and lemon juice and blend till you get the consistency you want.

This chutney is amazing with bread and also goes very well with chats and and any fried food like samosa, pakoras etc. The chutney was not very spicy and the raisins helped cut the spice factor even more. If you can take a lot more spiciness, you can reduce the amount of raisins, or increase the chili amount.

Green Mountain, White Cloud: A Novel of Love in the Ming Dynasty – François Cheng

In a medieval abbey near Paris, in a room piled high with old Chinese texts, lies a manuscript gathering dust. Though ordinary in appearance, it first captures the eye of the narrator of François Cheng’s novel. Then, once he begins to read, it captures his imagination and his heart. The book dates from the mid-seventeenth century, during the twilight of the Ming Dynasty. Barbarian armies are massing along the Empire’s Northern borders, and a vast and sophisticated civilization-during whose heyday China had begun to emerge from its long isolation and undergone an explosion in the arts equal in its way to Europe’s Renaissance-teeters on the brink of monumental and perhaps catastrophic change. Yet rather than filled with lore of military heroism, or with tales of palace intrigue, or with nostalgic memories of better days, the book tells a simple and very powerful love story.

It opens to a spring day, when a middle-aged doctor named Dao-sheng leaves the mountaintop Taoist monastery where he has been living and sets out for the Region of the South, to the city he had once visited thirty years earlier and where his life had been irrevocably changed. He had then been a strapping but poor young musician traveling with theater troupe. One evening, during a performance, he caught the eye of well-born young woman named Lan-ying. Their contact lasted but a minute, but to them it felt like an eternity. For this act of audacity he was banished to hard labor by the girl’s jealous fiancée, the dissipated scion of a powerful family, who had witnessed their exchange and grasped its significance. Across the decades of a life spent either on the run or hiding out in monasteries, where he mastered medicine and divination, Dao-sheng never forgot Lan-ying. One exchange of glances had sealed something forever, something whose enduring power would decide their fates.

2016 Week 6 Update

I got so fed-up of sitting with nothing to do at work that I finally went to Big B to ask him if there’s something I can help him with on Monday. He had loads of stuff to do, which meant I was pretty busy doing some interesting stuff for most of the week.

I’ve had some more vivid dreams this week – the first one had me with GG at some temple, maybe somewhere near the Himalayas and the temple looked to be a Shiva temple. I dream that I am praying and asking Lord Shiva to quickly call me to Mount Kailash (which is in present day Tibet/China and is in my bucket-list). I then start reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and wake up reciting it. I saw the time and it was 3 am then, which some people call the Brahma muhurat which is supposed to be a very auspicious time.

In the second dream I was in a car travelling some place quite far from home (not sure if it was Singapore or Mumbai). I come to a large temple which is set on the side of a busy road and is reached by a long staircase. I don’t remember much of this dream as it is quite fuzzy. Just before I slept that night, I did have one of my random conversations with my ishtadev and this could be the reason I dreamt of the temple.

Other than that, the week was ok with work politics happening as usual…

I am going to enjoy my CNY break so that I can get back to work with a refreshed and clear mind!

Today is the first day of the Chinese Year of the Fire Monkey so Gong Xi Fa Cai and Xin Nian Quai Le!
