Poetry: Growing Old

Growing Old

I look into the mirror and see the evidence
That probably I wish I didn’t have to but force myself to see

The strands of white mixing with the browns in my hair
Making me ever so often want to stop and stare

Is this is what growing old is all about, I mull?
Is it the physical changes or it is more mental?

Because while my body ages
My mind is still agile, still flexes and fizzles

So what is the definition of old?
The worldly definition keeps changing all the time

Is it what’s inside of you or what the world sees?
I don’t know the answers, do you?

Poem: Shopping

Who amongst us does not love the thrill that only comes from finding the perfect pair of shoes, that dress or even a bag! And if you managed to find it on sale, the thrill is doubled or even tripled.

The Rush that is Shopping

You enter the mall with anticipation
Fingering your cards, feeling just a bit maudlin

You have big plans for the day, waiting to jump into the fray
You walk around, checking out shops, sizing up your prey

Then when you have found the perfect dress you were looking for,
That’s when you rush towards it, find your heart starting to soar

Eyes sharp as an eagle, ears keen as a owl
Like a predator on the prowl

When the dress is in your hands, you breathe a sigh of relief
Then its the delicious excitement of making sure it fits and does not give you grief

Then you pay for it and take it home
Now you wait to twirl in it, maybe do a roam?

That’s the fun of shopping, it gives you that burst of adrenaline
The rush that comes from it, makes you shine

Poem: Festival Season

When August rolls by, it’s the start of the festival season in the Hindu calendar. Hardly a couple of weeks go by without another festival.

Festival Season

When the month of August comes around
That’s the time when festivals start to abound

It starts with the beautiful bonding between a brother and sister
That’s the festival of Raksha Bandhan, the bond strong and secure each year

The same day is the one day exclusively for the menfolk
Avani Avittam is what’s its called, not for the womenfolk

Then we celebrate the birth of the baby Krishna
Keep awake the whole night, just to welcome him, the one who is still an enigma

Then in a few weeks time it’s time to burst out the dhol and rain a cracker blaze
Because it’s time to welcome Lord Ganesh in our homes for the next eleven days

After that, its nine days of fun and frolic, getting together with your clique
When we pray to the various Goddesses in what’s called Navratri

The tenth day is when good triumphs over evil
That’s why it’s called Vijaya Dashami, the day where a fresh start is given a stamp of approval

Then starts the countdown to the biggest festival of the year
The festival of lights, the one that’s very dear

It’s the festival of lights aka Diwali which you await the whole year
New clothes checked, sweets and savouries start to appear

India is a land of festivals, the more the merrier
Because these festivals bring the family together,

It’s also a chance to get closer to your roots,
Because to know what you are helps to get to the future.

Poem: Time

glass-time-watch-business

Time

Some days you fly past like you have wings, just like an athlete

Some days, it feels like molasses is stuck on your feet

Days are spent watching the clock,

But still, it seems that time is all about being in a block

Tick tock tick tock goes the clock

Marching onwards, without a stop

Sometimes I wish I could pause time

Letting me gather my memories, but that’s a paradigm

For time never stops for anyone

It’s an illusion to think it can be broken

So savour every moment of your life

Don’t let time lead you to strife

Poem: Faith

lord2bganeshaIshtadev is a concept in Hinduism which literally translated to “cherished divinity” and is used to term one’s favourite God from within the 33 million Gods of the Hindu pantheon.

This poem on faith is my way of paying homage to my personal God, Lord Ganesha,  whom I reach out to whenever I am sad or happy and speak to him as a friend.

You are the name I take when I wake up and take in the first sight
And the one I think of when I close my eyes for the night

I think of you throughout the day, in all that I do in every way
Folding my hands often to pray

You are my friend, philosopher and guide
I know you are always on my side

You know all my secrets, my sadness and innermost thoughts
You know exactly what it is that ties me up in terrible knots

I know that you are always there to cover my back
That you will never fail me, will always take up the slack

Thank you for being there all the time
My Lord, My God, My Ishtadev!
