Secondary 1 Week 28 Update

Another school week comes to an end, but this was a short week for the children. Monday was a school holiday in Singapore as it was celebrated as Youth Day here. Then Wednesday was a public holiday due to Ramzan Id or Hari Raya Puasa as it is called in this part of the world.

GG is busy in school and preparing for their show choir competition Bedazzled and she comes home very tired when she has practice. I am glad the competition is later this month so that she can then start focusing on her Common Tests which start from the 1st of August as well as the second Semester Exam which will be later in October.

BB on the other hand, still has a very ‘don’t care‘ attitude when it comes to studying. He is smart, but not hard working. He is the kind of person who will only study what he wants to study, that is the subjects which interest him – which are usually Science and Maths and when he gets bored of these two, some English. The other subjects, especially Hindi and the Humanities are relegated to when I start nagging him to study! GG on the other hand, is more focussed!

That was the school week for us. How was it for you all? Have a wonderful Sunday!!

Secondary 1: Week 27 Update

This was week 1 of term 3 and the pace has started picking up. This term along with the next (term 4) will be very short ones. I understand that in secondary school, the year-end exams start and finish before primary school and they will start their year-end holidays by the first week of November, as opposed to mid-November in Primary school.

The first week also saw new subjects being introduced for both GG & BB. Since secondary school involves between 8-10 subjects, many schools introduce them, especially the newer subjects like history, geography, food & nutrition, design and technology etc. in piecemeal fashion. So they do one in terms 1 & 2 and the other in terms 3 & 4.

We’ve also gotten the dates for the common tests which will be in early August, so have to start preparing for those too.

GG came back from school the other day and mentioned she wants to try for the scholarship prize given by the government to the top 5/10% of each cohort per school. That’s a good thing to aim for, as that will mean she will be among the top 3 of her cohort. Let’s see if she is able to do so….

Other than that, we had a fairly normal week. Tomorrow is a holiday here for students as it has been declared ‘Youth Day‘. Youth Day is celebrated on the first sunday of July and the next working day which is Monday is a school holiday. This week, there’s another holiday in the form of Hari Raya Puasa or Ramzan Id, which marks end of the fasting month for muslims….

To all my muslim readers, here’s wishing you a very happy Ramzan Id! Id Mubarak….

Secondary 1 Week 26 Update

As of today, half the year has gone by…where did the weeks fly by so quickly!

So today is the last day of the mid-year school holidays. The four weeks seemed to have zoomed by and BB & GG are set for term 3 and 4 in school. Hindi school started yesterday though, so they’re already in school mode somewhat.

We didn’t do much in the last week of school. Last week I mentioned that GG lost her identity cum transport concession card, and while we waited in vain for someone to pick it up, it did not happen. So earlier this week, we had to go down to the nearest MRT station to get the card replaced. This was a very fast process and took less than 5 minutes. All they needed was her birth certificate and a passport-sized photo.

BB for his Flying Club CCA got a chance to get on a RSAF plane as part of their CCA. This was a transport plane if I understand and they flew across the island. According to BB, the weather was a bit dicey and there were concerns if they will be allowed up. However, fortunately, the weather changed and he was able to fly. He didn’t get a seat up in front and so could not see the cockpit, which was a bit of a bummer for him. This flight was something BB was anticipating right from the beginning of the school year, or rather as soon as he got into his CCA!

We also finally caught up with Finding Dory later in the week and all of us (GG, BB and me) really enjoyed it loads!

So this was our week this week…Have a great Sunday!!

2016 Secondary 1 Week 25 Update

We’re counting down to the last week of the school holidays this week. Both BB & GG have to go back to school one day each, GG for choir practice and BB for his Flying Club activity.

I’ve been pushing both of them to do schoolwork so that they can enjoy the last week of school. I think GG has finished most of it, except for a scrapbook, while BB still has some left.

The biggest thing that happened this week was GG losing her student concession card (yet again! though for the first time in secondary school). I’ve called the police station close to my house as well as the transport operator, but noone has still found the card and passed it across. I’ll wait till Monday evening and if its still not found, then we have to go and get another card made as GG needs to go to school later in the week. I am really hoping that someone finds the card which she lost it in a busy street near her grandma’s place and hands it over either to the police or to the transport operator so that we don’t have to go through the hassle of redoing this!!

Anyway happy Sunday and Happy Father’s Day….

Secondary 1 Week 24 Update

We’re almost halfway done with the school holidays and except for our trip to Jogya, I’ve not really done much with the children.

They’re around 80% done with holiday homework and this weekend we brought some more assessment books to work on. I need to work out a timetable with them for the rest of the holidays.

I’m also planning some activities this week, including museums, so lets see how we do those!

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads who read this blog and to the others, do not forget to wish your own dad…
