2017 Secondary 2 Week 1 Update

School started on 3rd January for children across Singapore. GG was super excited to start school, while BB was ambivalent about it. This year is a difficult year for them as this year they have to choose their subjects they want to specialise in for their O levels. So getting good marks, especially if you want to choose popular subjects is a must.

GG’s school timing has extended by almost an hour most days while BB’s remains the same. Secondary schools in Singapore end around 12:30 – 12:45 pm on Fridays to allow the Muslim teachers and students to go for their Friday prayers. If they have any activity on Friday, it will usually start around 2:30 – 3 pm. This allows the Muslims to go for prayers and also eat lunch.

School work has started for both and so have homework too. I’ve told BB that he should not be scolded by his teachers for anything this year and also do well in school. GG is already mature for her age, it’s just BB I need to focus on this year to make sure he does well enough to get the subjects of his choice for next year. I know he will be completely miserable if he does not get Science as he is set on becoming an aeronautical engineer.

Review: NASA – A Human Adventure

As regular readers will know, BB is a huge Aviation geek and loves anything and everything related to planes. Space is also one of his interests. So when I kept seeing the NASA adverts, I thought it will be something he will enjoy seeing. So on Boxing Day, in the afternoon we headed to the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands to see the exhibit and also perhaps catch one more if we had time. What I had underestimated was a good portion of Singapore had the same idea as us. Since we didn’t pre book the tickets, we had to stand in a long line (for almost 40 minutes) before we could buy our tickets. Since BB & GG are over 12, we could not buy the family package which is very reasonable but instead brought the Singapore residents and student tickets. The adult tickets were for S$15 each and the student and senior citizen tickets are for S$12 each. You do need to show your proof of residency and student id to get these rates, so keep your identity cards on hand.

Early Soviet astronauts

The exhibit showcases mankind’s space exploration with more than 200 artifacts from both NASA and the erstwhile Soviet Union from their early space programmes. The first part showcased the Pioneers of space research with articles, newspaper cuttings and artifacts from the first few who dared to breach Earth’s atmosphere and go to the beyond. It also had notations from the earliest scientists like Leonardo Da Vinci and H G Wells who first dreamt of space exploration.

The next part is all about the challenges of space exploration and also how the early space travelers survived the hostile environments there. There’s also information about the first moon landing and a mockup of the special rover they used. There was also displays of vehicles used as well as 1:10 scale model of Saturn V. We also saw the clothes the astronauts wore as well as the breakdown of what the clothes looked like.
The piece de resistance for BB was the mockup of the cockpit of a space shuttle plus a peek into what the crew’s living quarters looked like.

There was also a G Force simulator which you can go in by paying S$ 6 per person. We gave that a miss as both GG & BB were not interested.

Other exhibits included a full scale replicas of the Lunokhod 2, a remote controlled rover built by the Soviets between 1969-1977 and the Appolo Lunar Roving Vehicle, a battery operated four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the Appolo Programme. There were also the equipment used by the astronauts to collect moon rocks and space dust as well as the food they are while in space.

Children were not ignored. At every point, there were colouring tables for them using the space theme and also a large planet which tuned into different planets at the touch of a finger and gave you all the information about that planet. That was fun, not just for children, but adults too.

This exhibit runs till 19 March so if there are any readers from Singapore who want to catch the exit ion, you still have time!

Secondary 1 Week 44 Update

School’s out folks and BB and GG are on holidays for the next two months.

On Thursday, BB got his report book back and as expected, with the exception of Maths, he just scrapped through the other subjects. He got a good talking to from both S and me as well as his grandparents and hopefully this next year, he will do better.

I also went to GG’s school on Friday for her Parent Teacher Meeting and she has done quite well in school. She came second in class and all her teachers were in praise of her. Her form teacher also said he wished all his students were like her! But she also got scolded by most of her teachers for not doing as well as she could have done. She also just missed moving to the better stream by a fraction and now that we know, we’ll plan next year.

GG also has been asked to take Maths at a higher level next year. She has to go to school next week for bridging lessons. They also have to go back to school for CCA and camp.

Yesterday was Diwali, and we’re still in the Diwali food coma. Here’s wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali….

This update will end our secondary 1 year. From next week onwards, it’ll be just the normal weekly update until school starts again in January.

Secondary 1 Week 43 Update

The penultimate school week for the children, this was a pretty ho-hum week.

Both BB & GG got back their year-end exam results and while GG could have done better, BB’s results were awful! He just scrapped through most of his subjects and even in his strong subjects, he didn’t do as well as expected.

GG came second in class overall, but this was not enough for her to get promoted to the better stream. She has been however, asked to take Maths at a higher level. She needs to take a test tomorrow and if she does well in that (which I think she will be able to), then its a done deal!

So that was our almost last school week update. Have a great Sunday!!

Secondary 1 Week 42 Update

Exams ended for both children and BB even got back some marks. He got back marks for Maths, Science and English Literature and did well only for Maths. We’ll know what went wrong only when we see the papers next week.

Friday was a holiday for both of them and in the morning, we went to the bank and got them their very own savings accounts. Since they are under 16, the account comes with many restrictions and has to be a joint account with an adult (aka me). But as a start, it’s a good way to get them into a savings habit well before they start working and earning.

Later in the day, a whole bunch of BB’s friends came home and the boys (plus one girl) had a blast playing games, chatting and generally having fun.

Next week is results week plus some after exam activity. GG has a School Councillors camp which is compulsary for those who want to become confirmed as Councillors next year. This camp is a stay-in camp where she will have to stay in school overnight. BB has a glider fest in one of the polytechnics here which is an almost 12 hour activity the week after next. Plus GG has some choir practice as they are planning for the Singapore Youth Festival next year.

That’s all the updates for this week. I’ll probably do another couple of weeks more (till the end of the month) and then that will be the end of the Secondary 1 updates for this year.
