Poem: New Year Resolutions

Source

Every year when the new year rolls by all of us make resolutions to keep in the coming year. But how many of us actually keep to those resolutions? Here’s a poem which is all about our new year resolutions.

New Year Resolutions

As the clock strikes the midnight hour

The new year is here, you realise and start to feel a bit dour

You quickly start making lists with which to start your new year

Things like getting eating healhier and getting slimmer

January is usually fine, but the trouble starts around February

That’s when you realise that, maybe this resolution thing is not what you see

It’s not something you can deal with so that’s when you determine

When the next year tolls in, you are done

Resolutions are just not for you, you are sure

No plans, no goals, nothing to plan for the year

You plan to live your life on your terms

Enjoy life and just….Live!

Poetry: Friendships

A human being needs people around him, some more than others. All of us have friends and this poem is a celebration of the friendships we have in our lives.

Like everyone, I too have friends, but most of my closest friends don’t live in the same country as me, but thanks to technology, these days we are as close as we used to be.

Friendships

Some have so many that they don’t have time for everyone

While some have just a select few who are there for each other

They are with you through the bad and the good,

The good ones stay connected always, and with you they always stood

Some friendships go way back and you may not always meet

But when you do, you simply take over from where you last left off in a heartbeat

You know your friends inside out,

You know exactly what makes them scream and shout

Good friends are like diamonds I say, rare to find

But once found, they stay forever in your lives and make it shine

To the friends in my life, thank you for being there for me,

Though I don’t name you, you know who you are, and that’s the key

You are special in ways I can’t define

My friends, stay as you are and always shine

Poetry: Growing Old

Growing Old

I look into the mirror and see the evidence
That probably I wish I didn’t have to but force myself to see

The strands of white mixing with the browns in my hair
Making me ever so often want to stop and stare

Is this is what growing old is all about, I mull?
Is it the physical changes or it is more mental?

Because while my body ages
My mind is still agile, still flexes and fizzles

So what is the definition of old?
The worldly definition keeps changing all the time

Is it what’s inside of you or what the world sees?
I don’t know the answers, do you?

Poem: Shopping

Who amongst us does not love the thrill that only comes from finding the perfect pair of shoes, that dress or even a bag! And if you managed to find it on sale, the thrill is doubled or even tripled.

The Rush that is Shopping

You enter the mall with anticipation
Fingering your cards, feeling just a bit maudlin

You have big plans for the day, waiting to jump into the fray
You walk around, checking out shops, sizing up your prey

Then when you have found the perfect dress you were looking for,
That’s when you rush towards it, find your heart starting to soar

Eyes sharp as an eagle, ears keen as a owl
Like a predator on the prowl

When the dress is in your hands, you breathe a sigh of relief
Then its the delicious excitement of making sure it fits and does not give you grief

Then you pay for it and take it home
Now you wait to twirl in it, maybe do a roam?

That’s the fun of shopping, it gives you that burst of adrenaline
The rush that comes from it, makes you shine

Poem: Festival Season

When August rolls by, it’s the start of the festival season in the Hindu calendar. Hardly a couple of weeks go by without another festival.

Festival Season

When the month of August comes around
That’s the time when festivals start to abound

It starts with the beautiful bonding between a brother and sister
That’s the festival of Raksha Bandhan, the bond strong and secure each year

The same day is the one day exclusively for the menfolk
Avani Avittam is what’s its called, not for the womenfolk

Then we celebrate the birth of the baby Krishna
Keep awake the whole night, just to welcome him, the one who is still an enigma

Then in a few weeks time it’s time to burst out the dhol and rain a cracker blaze
Because it’s time to welcome Lord Ganesh in our homes for the next eleven days

After that, its nine days of fun and frolic, getting together with your clique
When we pray to the various Goddesses in what’s called Navratri

The tenth day is when good triumphs over evil
That’s why it’s called Vijaya Dashami, the day where a fresh start is given a stamp of approval

Then starts the countdown to the biggest festival of the year
The festival of lights, the one that’s very dear

It’s the festival of lights aka Diwali which you await the whole year
New clothes checked, sweets and savouries start to appear

India is a land of festivals, the more the merrier
Because these festivals bring the family together,

It’s also a chance to get closer to your roots,
Because to know what you are helps to get to the future.
