Penang Holiday Part 1: The Planning and Preparation

As many of you must know, we recently went for a short 4 day trip to Penang during the PSLE marking week. This post and subsequent posts will be about that trip. I decided to break up the trip into parts so I can post over a few days and also keep it more detailed. Another reason for the very detailed posts is so I have a good guide to Penang and if it helps anyone who is planning a trip there in the near future and they learn from our mistakes (and we had our fair share of them J), I’ll be so glad these posts come useful!

This time, we decided to ask our helper R if she wanted to join us for the holiday. Initially she was hesitant and said she did not want us to incur extra costs on her behalf, but both S and I reassured her that we would not have offered if we felt it was expensive and so she agreed and was super excited about the trip. She already had a Malaysia visa earlier in the year and I had gotten one a couple of months back for a work trip so we were good for visas. S, BB & GG don’t need visas for Malaysia as they are Singaporeans and all ASEAN country citizens don’t need visas to be a tourist in each other’s countries.

Penang is a 90 minute flight or a 10-12 hour drive from Singapore. Since S was not very comfortable about driving that long, especially on Malaysian roads, which can sometimes be unforgiving to Singapore registered cars, we decided to fly out there.

I researched a number of airline options and found that airlines which fly to Penang were SilkAir, AirAsia, JetStar and Tiger. SilkAir, which is the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, was my first choice. This airline also has code sharing flights with Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Virgin Australia, but the flights for the five of us was very high, more than three times the cost of our final ticket! We figured we’d rather spend money on a better hotel and shopping rather than on a bare 90 minute flight, so SilkAir was out of the reckoning. JetStar which has code sharing flights with Emirates and Qantas did not have flights available for our timings as we wanted a morning flight, reaching Penang not later than noon. It was down to AirAsia and Tiger and we went for Tiger because Air Asia had loads of other charges (especially for non-members who use credit cards to purchase tickets) which increased the ticket prices substantially. The Tiger ticket was reasonable and we got to pay via the self-automated payment machines which are everywhere in Singapore. We also got 10 kg of carry-on baggage per person which was just nice for a bit of shopping in Penang without having to pay for check-in baggage.

The Tiger flight was ok, nothing much going on except that even water is chargeable! They were charging SGD 4 for a glass/bottle (I couldn’t figure that) of water which is sheer robbery considering security does not allow you to carry in any water!

We landed in Penang around 10:45 and immigration was a breeze! We had planned to rent a car at the airport itself as Singapore drivers can drive on Malaysian roads using a Singapore driving license. We were looking for a smallish car which could take 5 people plus some luggage. Our first choice of car rental company didn’t have the car we wanted, so we went to the one next to it. The company was called Seraya and though we just booked it without any research, it turned out well!

I got my mobile service provider’s unlimited data plan for Malaysia for SGD 15 per day which was very useful for mapping out routes. If we rented a GPS from the rental, it would cost us approximately SGD 10 per day, which made the data plan a good buy. I got the plan for just 3 days, thinking by the last day we could get to the airport on our own, but ended up getting Google Maps to work on the last day too!

Instagram Interludes

I’m just back from a short holiday to the Pearl of the Orient, Penang. While the holiday definitely needs a couple of posts, here are some teasers from the trip. So here is Instagram Interludes – Penang edition!

Travel: The only thing you buy which makes you richer!

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” – Saint Augustine

We’re leaving Penang in a few hours now and I am already having ‘Holiday Blues’. I love taking holidays and love the whole process – right from researching locations and hotels to tracking airfares, planning the itineraries and looking for great places to eat…. I am a planner by nature and so this job automatically falls to me. I can even spend time reading on the best way to pack!

I want to see the whole world and experience not onluy different cultures, but also unique experiences in each of the places we visit. We’ve not done a lot of travel till now, preferring to visit places in the region, rather than travelling afar, but now that BB & GG are all grown up, it’ll be fun to visit newer and more adventurous places without having anxious thoughts on nap and meal times!

One place I really want to visit is Europe. I love reading historical fiction and loads of these are set in Europe. I want to experience the Pantheon, the Tower of London, the castles of England, Scotland and Ireland, the Louvre and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Oh and the art in all the galleries!! All those places I have only read about, I want to see and breathe in the air.

I have always believed that travel gives you that edge of sophistication that nothing else does and it is for this reason that I want GG & BB to see as much of the world as we can afford before they are thrust upon the world. Travel is an education that no school can provide you, it teaches you to go out of your comfort zone and learn to get along with people from diverse cultures. Children grow up to be well rounded individuals with a global perspective which will stand them in good stead through their lives and in anything they choose to do in life. How better to learn about the beauty of this planet we call home than by travelling….

Gosh! All this talk of travel is making me itchy to go somewhere else. We do have our trip to India to look forward to in December, but now I really need to save up and go somewhere else….

I need to get going now or we’ll miss our flight back home, but once I am back home and have sorted the hundreds of photos we took, I’ll do a couple of posts on Penang.

Of Flights and Photos

While travelling, I usually almost always take the aisle seat as I just can’t see myself squeezed into a corner seat for hours together. This means that I rarely see a city while take off or landing.

Last week, on a work trip to Kuala Lumpur, I decided to take a window seat. This is a ridiculously short flight with a total flying time of 45 mins which is why I decided to risk the window seat so I could take some pictures from the air.

As soon as the seat beat sign comes off, the stewardess rush to get the drinks trolley. Even before they finish the drinks run the captain starts the announcement to the crew to prepare to land! By the time they are back to collect the empty drink cans, it’s time to land…That’s how short the flight is. It takes longer to get to the airport, plus the wait and the trip to the hotel than the actual travel. For example our trip last week the outward bound flight from Singapore to KL was scheduled at 10:15. I left home at 7:30, reached the airport around 8:15, then a two hour wait at Changi, followed by the 45 minute flight (which was around 30 mins late), then an almost 60 minute drive to the hotel. So my door-to-door trip was a grand total of 5.5 hours. The total drive from Singapore to KL is 5 hours! Returning back was worse – we were stuck in the Friday evening traffic on the way to the airport and it took us 2 hours to get to KLIA from the hotel in downtown KL. We were on the last flight home, leaving the hotel around 6 and reaching home almost at midnight!

Anyway, here are some pictures I took, while take-off and just when we were about to land…

Holiday Packing

So we’re down to the one-week countdown for our trip. Our helper V left last night and it’s just going to be the four of us till we leave next Monday. Since I do not have any more leave from work, I’ll be going in to work the rest of the week with S staying at home to be with BB & GG. Luckily, I have some time off due to me, so I’ll be coming home earlier (at lunch time) on Thursday and Friday. The children are spending their time today at their grandparents place, so that’s taken care off. GG & BB are super excited that from noon on Friday I’ll be with them 24/7 till the morning of the 3rd, when we have to go back to school/work.

Most of the shopping (aka lists that need to be purchased) have been done. S pulled down the luggage yesterday so our guest room now resembles a hotel – suitcases, both belonging to V and us, plastic bags full of stuff waiting to be packed and other assorted stuff that needs to either go into a closet or out of the house.

My packing style is making lists. I love making lists and so will usually make a couple of lists for each trip that we make. This year I found an iPhone app uPackingListFree that will do that for me.

What I usually do is pack my clothes and other things which I will not be using from that point on till the destination. I usually overpack and over the days between the time I start packing till we leave, I will keep refining my items till such time I am satisfied that I’ve got exactly what we need.

Now that we’re at the one-week mark, I think I will start the packing process from Wednesday. I’ll keep you updated…

P.S: WordPress just informed me that this is my 150th post! So woohoo to me!!
