The World of Suzie Wong – Richard Mason

The World of Suzie Wong - Richard MasonRobert was looking for a place where he could live and paint. He rented  room at the Nam Kok Hotel, only to discover he was the only guest not renting his room by the hour. Then he met Suzie at the bar. He’d never known anyone quite like her, and he was completely captivated. To Suzie, her love for Robert was something entirely new and different, wiping out her past and making her forget that she had ever been a “dirty yum-yum girl.” But even in Hong Kong, where many white expatriates had Chinese mistresses, their romance caused a stir.

This beautifully written time capsule of a novel will resonate with readers today just as it did when it was first published in 1957. It quickly became an international best seller, inspiring a Broadway play, a hit film, and even a ballet.

Happy New Year…

The world has no ended, so here we are in 2013! Happy New Year everyone…

2012 was a roller coaster ride for me personally where I went from being gainfully employed full-time to becoming a SAHM. I connected immensely with my children during this period, but the downside was the loss of my career and income.

What will 2013 bring for me – well I do not have a crystal ball to look into, but I do know that it will definitely be better for me than the year that went by.

I did do some new year resolutions and exercising regularly, eating healthily and writing more regularly were the usual suspects. Another one I want to do this year is spend some time everyday reflecting on things to be thankful for. Hopefully I can follow this…

Mrs Ali’s beloved home is under threat – a new road-widening scheme threatens to destroy both it and the family business, the Marriage Bureau for Rich People. Meanwhile, Mrs Ali’s niece Pari, a young Muslim widow, adopts a destitute Hindu boy. This unorthodox arrangement offends Muslim and Hindu alike in the sleepy Indian town of Vizag. The Ali family is plunged into crisis, facing the threat of police action, social boycott and excommunication.

There is one plan that might just keep Pari and her son together, and the home Mr and Mrs Ali have shared for many years intact, but it’s desperate gamble. Do they risk everything for a small chance of success? But can they afford not to?

The Accidental Office Lady – Laura Kriska
An American Woman in Corporate Japan

A young woman with a new degree in Japanese studies and plenty of youthful idealism and can-do spirit accepts a job as the first American trainee at Honda’s headquarters in Tokyo. Her image of Japanese corporate life is dramatically challenged on her first day at work when she is issued a blue polyester uniform—a uniform worn only by women!

From menial beginnings serving tea to executives and cleaning the boss’s desk, to a stint in public relations, to developing training classes for Japanese associates going to America, Laura Kriska recounts her struggle to adapt to—and ultimately thrive in—the culture of a traditional Japanese company. Shortly before her departure, she travels full circle by introducing a successful campaign to make women’s uniforms optional.

Now with a new foreword by the author, The Accidental Office Lady is a vivid and valuable firsthand account not only of corporate Japan and the gender inequality that persists within it, but of an outsider’s successful attempt to work within cultural boundaries to affect organizational change.
