2017 Secondary 2 Week 17 Update

For both the children mid-year exams have begun. It will go on for almost two more weeks and then chill for a month or so before the next term starts.

Last week, one night after the children had been to bed, I got out of my room for something and saw the light still switched on in BB’s room. He was playing some game on his laptop when he should have been asleep. So I had a good talk with him about what he wants to do and how he will get there. He needs to do well in specific subjects this year to allow him to take pure sciences. He says all the right things to me, but the execution, well that’s something else. This week he brought back forms for two space camp home and they look really interesting. The first one is a generic one, but in the second one, they’re going to have a space scientist from NASA who will come over to talk to them as well as talks on NASA’s mars rovers etc. I think I am more excited than him for these camps. I am so thankful that the school/govt subsidies mean that we pay little to nothing for these extra activities!

GG has also been busy in school with exams. She is much more focused than BB, but her stakes are also slightly higher this year!

They both got the Hindi exam marks yesterday and GG, surprisingly didn’t do well. BB, well, the less said the better! I am quite disappointed with both, more with BB than GG as he just doesn’t get it!

Have a wonderful Sunday people!

2017 Week 16 Update

S is back in Singapore from a week-long trip to India. While he was away, it was just us and R at home. Mornings were quite easy as there was no lunch to be prepared, so life was quite easy!

There was some issues with their tickets as S’ aunt is handicapped and had booked preferred seats for them, but since she was also a wheelchair user, the airline arbitrarily cancelled her seat. Then there was a flurry of calls between me, the airline and S in India to sort out the issue. Long story short, they gave them the front row bassinet seats and refunded the preferred seat cost.

I saw a sea of difference between the way S behaved when he was not in town. I have traveled more for work compared to S, and I behave so differently! I don’t know if this is because I am a mum and he is not, but irrespective of the place I go to, irrespective of the time difference, I make it a point to speak to the children at least once a day, usually in the morning. Earlier it used to be in the morning because the children didn’t have a smartphone and S’s schedule meant I could not speak in the evening. I remember waking up at 3:30 am just to speak to them before they leave for school and waiting late at night to speak to them. S just messaged me a couple of times, but didn’t speak to BB & GG. Is this because guys and dads are just wired differently? S said his phone connection was not very good there, so I am going to give him the benefit of doubt here.

I am come very dangerously close to one year of unemployment. I really hope I don’t go too long before I get a new position. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed and hoping for the best!

Have a wonderful week folks!

2017 Week 15 Update

This was again the same sort of week. I’ve gotten some calls from recruiters and even went for a first interview, which, according to me, went well. I haven’t yet heard back from them yet, so hopeful for the same.

This weekend was a nice long one, one that coincidently had a public holiday on the Tamil New Year day. So I was able to make a nice lunch for everyone at home and pretty much the whole weekend was spent at home.

S left yesterday for a week’s trip to India. His nephew’s first birthday is being celebrated in India and so he, along with his mum and aunt went for the celebrations. I and the children decided not to go because of school.

Yesterday, when I was talking to my mum we happened to speak about a cousin who was planning to do his son’s thread ceremony in Sringeri, the small town in the state of Karnataka which is the seat of his Holiness, the Shankaracharya. We are followers of the Shankaracharya and so this trip which will happen 4-5 years down the line will be very special. I was telling my mum that even if the children are busy with school and if it happens during term time, I will make a trip alone. That led me to think that I’ve never really taken a holiday alone (work trips don’t count!). I want to put that on my bucket list and do this soon. And if I get the chance to go on any work trips again, I want to take a couple of days, especially if it is a new place, to check out the place and see the sights!

Have a great week people!

Secondary 2 Week 15 Update

It was the usual sort of week for BB & GG. GG finally finished with her Singapore Youth Festival and so the stress of the past few weeks are finally over!

BB’s CCA has been stood down and they will restart after exams. GG has one more CCA to get through, where they are having an SYF finishing party as well as a farewell to her Secondary 4/5 seniors who complete their CCA for the year so that they can focus on their national exams.

Now, nagging mum mode starts as I start pushing them to study for their exams which start in 2 weeks time! As I have mentioned earlier, this is a critical year for them, and especially for BB as he wants to do science (I have mentioned before how obsessed he is about science). GG has it a bit easier because she wants to do humanities, which should be easier to get in!

So that was our week, have a blessed Easter people!

2017 Week 14 Update

This was the usual sort of week, but with one small difference. I had to go back to the hospital to get my eyes checked again as well as take a test I had failed the last time I was there. It took a while, but the doctor has, for now, ruled out any glaucoma. I was quite happy when I heard the news as this disease has no known cure at this moment. But I will still have to go back for a check-up after around 18 months just to check out my eyes, which can get ruined due to diabetes!

I have been walking a lot for the past few weeks, averaging around 10 km per day. This took a toll on my right ankle and it had been painful on and off for some time now. By Thursday, it was so painful that I could not even walk. So I had to see the doctor who gave me some painkillers and a gel to put in the affected area. The pain went away within a day, but I decided to keep my feet up for the next few days to ensure it is completely cured. So from today, I am back to my regular exercise programming!

That’s all from this week folks! Hope this week will be better than the last one (I keep writing this and hoping week after week, but to no avail)!

Have a wonderful week people!
