2018 Secondary 3 Week 3 Update

Another week of school and the children are settling in school. It’s a new environment with new subjects for both of them. Their common tests are coming up soon, earlier for GG than BB, but I also understand that they will have class tests in the meantime.

I also went to both school parent support group (PSG) meetings this week, and the contrast between the two was quite telling! GG’s school is the older one,  but the PSG is not strong and parents are quite indifferent. BB’s school, on the other hand, has a very active support group and parents are quite on the ball in partnering with the school.

Nothing much happened in school this week as it is still early days yet, so let’s see how this year pans out for both of them.

2018 Week 2 Update

Another week for us at home. The weather in Singapore has been very good for the past week. It’s been raining continuously for the past week, almost 24/7, and the result has been a windy and chilled country! This weather won’t last long according to the meteorological department, so we have to make the most of it while it lasts. As I write this, I can hear the wind singing outside my window. For those who live in countries which actually have seasons, this may be routine, but for those of us living in tropical countries, which only have one season – hot, this is novel indeed!

In other news, I’ve had a passive-aggressive thing going with someone in GG’s school parent support group. This person, whose child has already graduated, got in touch with me and started asking me what I am going to contribute to the group this year. I replied that it would depend on the activity, the time commitment needed as well as my schedule. Then this person came back and said members can’t choose the activity they want to get involved in. I lost it then because this is completely voluntary and so when pressed, I responded by saying in such a case, I am willing to become an inactive member. I expected this person, who is the admin of the WhatsApp chat group where all this was taking place, to remove me from the group, but this hasn’t happened yet. There’s a meeting this week, for which I am still in two minds about attending or not. Let me give it some more thought before I make a final decision.

2018 Secondary 2 Week 2 Update

The school life is in full swing for BB & GG. They have homework everyday and I see them spending more time doing schoolwork than before.

GG is planning to stand for elections in her CCA to become an executive committee member. They have already started working with the current leaders. I really hope she gets what she wants. She is also finding this year a bit more stressful, but she is a trooper and has a will not give up attitude which I really admire.

As for BB, he is enjoying school, but since he is in the so called best class this year, the stress of doing well is there.

It’s early days still with the first common tests coming up in a couple of weeks time. I guess we’ll know for sure how well the children have adapted to secondary 3 then.

2018 Week 1 Update

The first week of the new year and it was the usual sort of week for me.

The children have started school and I am back to my usual routine of writing and looking for new positions. Because most people are still on holiday or probably clearing the work that accumulated over the holidays, I am still in waiting mode.

It was a hectic weekend for us. On Saturday, S and I drove down to a couple of polytechnics here which had open houses to check out the courses that the children are interested in. I was quite impressed by what the polys had to offer and so I think the choices the children are making are correct. We are actually two years early, but wanted to check them out earlier in case the choices were wrong and we had to recalibrate!

On Sunday, GG received again the Edusave Scholarship Award which is awarded to the top 10% of students of her cohort. I hope she wins this award next year also, but it looks quite unlikely since she has now moved to the better stream and it may be difficult to achive this.

Here’s looking forward to a productive week!

2018 Secondary 3 Week 1

School has started and life is beginning to get hectic for BB & GG!

GG started school on a very positive note. As I have mentioned previously, she moved up to the better stream and is doing more humanities subjects. These are subjects she is very interested in and wants to make a career in one of those. She is also exploring about becoming a  teacher, so we’ll have to see how this all pans out.

She also started the school year falling sick but has soldiered on because of practice for the choir. They had a performance yesterday for the incoming sec 1s and were promoting their CCA to get interested students to join and despite having a temperature, she went to school and gave it her all! Last year, her form teacher, who also manages the choir mentioned that she will be up for a CCA leadership position. Oh, and she also managed to become the class secretary, so that’s one more leadership position for her.

BB’s Sec 3 life is not as dramatic as that of his sister, but he is also doing the subjects he enjoys. The pace has also picked up for him with homework being given out right from the first lesson. Some subjects are new, yet old, like pure physics, pure chemistry, advanced math and pure history. He also has said that he likes all his teachers, so hopefully this year he does better than sec 2.

Later today, GG will receive her second consecutive scholarship award. I’m trying to get BB to also achieve this award next year, let’s see! Both children will have their common tests next month, so I need to start being on their case.

Hope 2018 has been good for you so far. Again, Happy New Year!!
