Poem: The Mumbai Monsoon

The rains are nothing new to Singapore, and these days we have rains most afternoons, but because the sewage and rain canal systems are good, there is hardly any flooding here. But it’s a completely different ball game in Mumbai where each Monsoon means wading through sometimes waist-deep water and having the transportation system crippled for a few days till the waters recede. But there is a magic in the rains and I used to love the monsoon. I loved having it rain when I come back home from college because it meant I could walk home from the bus-stop without opening my umbrella and get wet in the rain, but conversely hated this when I went to school or work because it meant staying in wet clothes all day. The rains have been slashing Mumbai in the past month or so and when I saw the visuals of wet roads and some waterlogged areas, this poem came about unbidden. This poem is a relfection of how the monsoon used to be when I lived in India, so it may be different now.

The Mumbai Monsoon

When June makes it way, newspapers hold sway
Everyone has their own theory on when the monsoon will come and play
The MRF prediction is hotly debated, Kerala and then Goa’s rains are long awaited

When the sky starts to darken, the mood shift is palpable
Everyone looks upwards in an occurance that is annual

With hope and a prayer in their heart,
They pray the rain God will do his part
Shower the city with just enough rain
So the streets don’t flood, causing people pain

But flooding is inevitable, the price Mumbaikars pay
For a system built ages ago, in a city then known as Bombay
But the spirit of the city during times like this magnify manifold
It’s only during a crisis, when you see people’s heart of gold

But the monsoon in Mumbai is something really special
To see the waves buffet the Gateway and Marine Drive
To get wet in the rains, to revel in the pure water that is sometimes harsh, sometimes gentle
This is a time when your soul comes alive

I really miss the Mumbai monsoon and maybe those years
When life was more carefree and simple, without the stress which interferes
But life moves on and I hope to experience the monsoon once more
To live that life of that carefree child and young adult, without any worry and chore!

Poem: Wildflowers

This poem came unbidden to me during Singapore’s Circuit Breaker while on a walk. I really loved the little wildflowers which bloomed during this time when the workers who are famed for keeping Singapore neat and tidy did not work. The public were thrilled with these wildflowers and after letters sent to the National Parks, they have now decided that these blooms will not be cut down in non residential areas.

Wildflowers

I was fed up sitting inside, staring at the same four walls
When I glanced outside and saw the clear blue sky

I knew I had to get out and walk, breathe in the crisp air
I quickly masked up, as that is our new normal and went outside
And started to walk to the nearby park

On the way, I saw empty streets and lonely void decks
Deserted of the usual crowd of people, the world seen probably as small specksLimited to our own area, we are now social distancing you know
We can’t move around as before, we need to keep away, go on with the flow

As I enter the park, I see the wild grass and leaves
On the ground, fallen flowers make a vivid carpet which sway in the breeze
Peering close, I can see small patches of wildflowers
Poking their heads out, fighting to live inspite of everything

I look at these flowers as an analogy of life
In today’s world, we are fighting to survive against all odds
Just as these flowers poke their heads even under difficult conditions
So we should take inspiration from them and try to flourish in the most adverse situations

Be like the wildflower that flourishes inspite of all odds
Be like the wildflower that lives another day despite knowing it may be it’s last

Poem: The Rainbow

World over things are getting slightly better, but we are still not out of the wood yet. There will be a new normal when things start going back to normal (or as normal as it can be) and the world we know would have changed completely. This panademic is a defining moment for all of us. Yet, in all this misery, we have seen moments of hope, resilience and how far the human spirit can go.

A rainbow has been seen for centuries as a symbol of hope, a promise from the greater power that things will get better

The Rainbow

When things seem to be at rock bottom,
When you feel broken and numb,

When nothing in life feels like it is going your way
When you feel bound, sad and gray

That is when you step outside to get some fresh air
To think, to feel and maybe say a little prayer

Then you look up and see the aftermath of the rain
The sun peeking out of the clouds and the you feel hope ignite within you again

You see the sky light up in a huge smile, you see a rainbow,
And you know that things will be fine, your face now has that glow

Follow that rainbow, follow your deepest wish,
You will get there one day, your life’s race will reach the line that says finish

The symbol of hope, of a new beginning
This rainbow is a sign that will make your heart sing!

Poem: Our Life Today

The situation with Covid-19 is a grim one in our world today. This poem came out when I started thinking about our world and how our new normal is completely different today as compared to just a few months back.

Our Life Today

The streets are empty, they are devoid of traffic
The stores are empty, there’s a sense of panic

People are hoarding goods and groceries
Toilet paper, canned goods, vegetables and cheese

Don’t be that person, purchase only what you need
Let there be enough supplies for everyone, don’t give in to greed

Stay home, stay safe, don’t get out unless absolutely necessary
Travel, friends and party, they will be there, please that’s a humble plea

Use technology to keep in touch, there are many options available
Use them to the fullest, be nimble and agile

In all this, don’t forget to thank our heros of today
Our healthcare, frontline, retail and delivery workers who are all in the fray

Playing a huge part in trying to contain and find a that Covid-19 cure
So life can go on as before without taking much of a detour

So here’s a round of applause to all of us, because you have also done your part
How you ask, well by staying home, maintaining social distance and staying apart

Poem: Life’s Choices

Life throws choices at us all the time. We make choices almost every second of our day and sometimes these choices backfire on us. What is it about life’s choices that make it so hard to second guess?

Life’s Choices

You arrive at a converging path, wondering which road to take
Life gives you choices always, it has always been yours to make
Choose wisely and you will be blessed,
But if you make the wrong choice, you can make life a living hell

But that is the way life operates, choices abound at every stage
You have but to choose your path, on stage and off stage
It has always been your choice, you can be what you wish
Chained to tradition or free to choose, a winner to the finish

Sometimes you do need to take the road less travelled
It may be hard, you may be baffled
But when success kisses your feet
All those troubles seem trivial and your success that much sweet

So dream the most audacious dream you are able to
Then choose to make that a reality, you can do it, yes you
Today will pass soon, tomorrow awaits you eagerly
Rejoice and enjoy your choices, because that’s how the dice rolls!
