The Girl with Ghost Eyes – M.H. Boroson

25159239

It’s the end of the nineteenth century in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and ghost hunters from the Maoshan traditions of Daoism keep malevolent spiritual forces at bay.

Li-lin, the daughter of a renowned Daoshi exorcist, is a young widow burdened with yin eyes—the unique ability to see the spirit world. Her spiritual visions and the death of her husband bring shame to Li-lin and her father—and shame is not something this immigrant family can afford.

When a sorcerer cripples her father, terrible plans are set in motion, and only Li-lin can stop them. To aid her are her martial arts and a peachwood sword, her burning paper talismans, and a wisecracking spirit in the form of a human eyeball tucked away in her pocket. Navigating the dangerous alleys and backrooms of a male-dominated Chinatown, Li-lin must confront evil spirits, gangsters, and soul stealers before the sorcerer’s ritual summons an ancient evil that could burn Chinatown to the ground.

2019 Week 12 Update

This was the term break week so nothing much happened.

I didn’t have any work commitments this week so pretty much spent all my time at home.

We were planning a trip to Johor Bahru this week and because of GG’s school commitments, we could not find anytime to go together as a family. So S and I decided to go in just to do some grocery and other shopping. We left home around 9 am and except for a bit of a jam at the customs in the Singapore side, the trip across the causeway was quite smooth. We hit a bottleneck at the Malaysian customs. We were unfortunate to be in the one lane which only had one customs Bay with an officer who was super slow! We spent almost an hour in that lane getting frustrated with other vehicles just zipping past us on either side.

The return trip was uneventful as we had decided to leave from JB around 3 pm. We cleared Malaysian customs easily and drove across the causeway with a bit of a wait on the Singapore side.

It was a good trip and we managed to purchase all that we had on our list plus more!

This week will be a slightly more hectic week because I actually put some of my items which I had to do last week to this week. Wish me a productive time!

Have a wonderful and productive week!

2019 Secondary 4 Week 12 Update

This week is the school holiday week but GG barely had time to breathe. She was practically in school almost every day and got so tired that she says she wants a holiday before school starts tomorrow.

BB on the other hand, surprisingly didn’t have school at all. I was actually surprised by this given that they are the pure science class but I guess his teachers do enough of extra lessons during term time that they probably felt it was unnecessary during the holidays.

School starts tomorrow and with that term 2 where the pace will be intensified to rush to finish the curriculum before June so that students have ample time to revise for their O levels.

Have a wonderful Sunday folks!

The Meaning of Consuelo – Judith Ortiz Cofer

The Signe family is blessed with two daughters. Consuelo, the elder, is thought of as pensive and book-loving, the serious child-la niña seria-while Mili, her younger sister, is seen as vivacious, a ray of tropical sunshine.

Two daughters: one dark, one light; one to offer comfort and consolation, the other to charm and delight. But, for all the joy both girls should bring, something is not right in this Puerto Rican family; a tragedia is developing, like a tumour, at its core.

Eddie Trusted, an English school teacher in Colombo, wants to spend his life with Menaka Rupasinghe, a vibrant Sri Lankan beauty, but as with all matters of the heart, there’s an obstacle. If Eddie wants to wed Menaka, it is Thilak Rupasinghe, her orthodox terror of a father, whom he must woo and whose farts he must kiss –

Thilak wants his daughter to marry someone of the same race, religion and caste, and if possible from the same locality.

In a desperate bid to make his dream a reality, Eddie tries to connect with Thilak in other ways – eating curries that make him bleed spice and breathe fire, driving drunk through red lights, threatening co-workers with violence, and sleeping with snakes. But will Eddie ever be good enough for a man who hates the colour of his skin?
