2017 Week 43 Update

The same old week. There’s literally nothing to add to last week.

With the great week we had with regards to the children doing well in school and getting the subjects of their choice, I really wanted the week to end on a high with some good news on my job search front too. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. Aah well, I’ll take what happiness I get!

I am hoping this week will have some positive news for me!

Have a wonderfully blessed week everyone!!

2017 Secondary 2 Week 43 Update

Contrary to what I thought, BB actually got the subjects of his choice! Right until the results were to be declared, we were thinking of all the other combinations he had chosen and all the permutations and combinations about the subjects he would be allocated. I rushed him and we kept refreshing the page.

The school released the results of all the children at the same time by pushing out their class allocations. The first class was the pure science class and as we scrolled down, we saw his name around halfway down the list (the order was alphabetical, with girls coming in first and then boys). We were thrilled and both of us literally started jumping up and down. On checking both his besties in this school are also in the same class! We are beyond thrilled. So BB will do 8 subjects excluding Physical Education and Character and Citizenship Education for his O levels.

We have to wait till Tuesday to see what class GG gets and whether she gets advanced math or not. She will do 7 subjects since she is not going to take Pure sciences. 2019 is going to be a Super hectic year in our household!

Happy Sunday folks!!

The Hungry Ghosts – Shyam Selvadurai

12846205The novel centres around Shivan Rassiah, the beloved grandson, who is of mixed Tamil and Sinhalese lineage, and who also—to his grandmother’s dismay—grows from beautiful boy to a striking gay man.

As the novel opens in the present day, Shivan, now living in Canada, is preparing to travel back to Colombo, Sri Lanka, to rescue his elderly and ailing grandmother, to remove her from the home—now fallen into disrepair—that is her pride, and bring her to Toronto to live our her final days. But throughout the night and into the early morning hours of his departure, Shivan grapples with his own insatiable hunger and is haunted by unrelenting ghosts of his own creation.

Eriseri 7Since my mum is with me, I got her to make this dish which comes to Tamil Nadu via Kerala. This is made of Elephant’s Foot or Yam which looks like a stone but when cooked is a yummy dish which can replace potatoes in a dish.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups yam, peeled and cubed into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 cup raw bananas, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup + 3 tbsp grated coconut
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 2 tsp peppercorns
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Method:

  • In a pan or pressure cooker, cook the cubed yam and raw banana with the turmeric powder till they are completely cooked and soft. Keep  aside
  • In a small pan, heat 1 tsp oil and fry the cumin seeds, peppercorns and red chillies till they are brown and keep aside. When cool, grind it to a smooth paste with 1/4 cup grated coconut and keep aside.
  • Now add this paste to the cooked vegetables and season it with salt and let it come to a rolling boil. When the gravy is as thick as you like it, remove from the flame and keep aside.
  • In the same smaller pan, heat the remaining oil and add the mustard seeds and when it splutters, add the curry leaves and the balance coconut and fry until the coconut becomes golden and crisp.
  • Pour this over the cooked vegetable, adjust seasoning and serve hot with plain rice. This also goes well with any Indian flatbread.
