Yogyakarta: Planning and Day 1

We’re back from Yogyakarta for more than a week now, and all the photos have been uploaded and shared and so I thought I’ll do a post on what we did and where we went. This can be useful to anyone else planning on visiting this place.

Changi Airport

This trip was one of the most hurried and last-minute trip ones I’ve done. We were vacillating between destinations and then when we zoomed into Yogyakarta, we realised that travelling by a full service airline was almost two to three times the cost of travelling by budget airlines and S was not really interested in using a budget airline. Finally I managed to convince him and we chose the budget airline, Air Asia Indonesia to travel. The flight originates from Yogyakarta and leave from there at 7:30 am and this meant that we had to stay an extra night there. The only other airline servicing this destination is SilkAir, the regional arm of Singapore Airlines.

Next up was a place to stay in. As usual I looked up TripAdvisor and decided to finalise the Eastparc Hotel, which was one of the top rated hotels in Yogya. The hotel is very close to the airport (around 10 minute drive) and to the Prambanan complex (around 20 minute drive). There is a mall close by (10 minute walking distance) which is standard as malls go, but has shops and a hypermarket which is good for necessities.

We also decided to splurge on a higher class of room, called the Premier room, which would guarantee us connecting rooms. This was around SGD 10 more than the standard room rate and was totally worth it. The room’s minibar was complimentary and the kids and S had a blast using it.

With two UNESCO World Heritage sites in its vicinity as well as others in the city and close to it, we decided to use the services of a driver and/or guide. I used trip advisor and the yogyes.com site and emailed quite a few of the names mentioned there. After going back and forth with some of the agencies, we finally settled on Danar and Ibot from Jogjakartadrivers.com as we felt they gave us the best deal. We spent around IDR 110,000 for the use of a driver for 2 days and Yus, the driver was a wonderful person, warm and affable and went out of his way to accommodate us and our needs. The money didn’t include any entrance fees to the sites, any guide fees and food and drinks. But Ibot, whom I was liaising with, sent me the amounts for all the attractions and also helped book tickets for a performance we were interested in (more about that later). So all in all, fantastic service and I will not hesitate in recommending their service.

Changi Airport

The flight out of Singapore was at 11 am and we were expected to reach Yogyakarta around 12:30 pm. We had arranged for the hotel to send us a vehicle to pick us up as this was a new place. This was not a free service and we paid the equivalent of SGD 10. We also used this on our way back also as we had to leave the hotel at 5:30 am and I was not sure if we could successfully get a taxi at that time, which also happened to be the first day of the fasting month of Ramadan!

The flight was uneventful and when we reached the hotel, only one room was ready. So we had lunch at their in-house restaurant Verandah which was quite good and rested for a while till the other room was ready. Then we decided to venture out to buy some provisions for the next two days which was supposed to be very hectic.

The next day, Yus was supposed to pick us up at 3:30 am to take us to Borobudur to see the sunrise and then on to the Dieng Plateau which was supposed to be a three hour drive from Borobudur. The third day was also action packed with sightseeing within the city envions including the Sultan’s Palace, an erstwhile water palace, the temples of Prambanan and Ratu Boko to see the sunset and capped by a Ramayan ballet performance to end a hectic day. We planned to keep the last full day in Yogyakarta free to shop and just recover from the two hectic days.

I’ll post more about the places we saw next week….

If I were Stranded on a Deserted Island…

The other day I was reading and there was a post on the top things you would have with you if you were stranded. Most people had very innovative and practical items to have on hand, but this actually got me thinking – do we actually think we will be stranded when we travel and have the x number of items on our person? So anyway this got me thinking and if I were ever stranded, especially on a deseted and desolate island where communication is an issue and I am the only person there (aka Robinson Crusoe), this is what I hope I have on myself – otherwise I guess I am doomed!

  1. A solar powered iPhone: This is so that I can try to communicate with the world in a bid to be saved. This should also help in passing the time should I be bored and will also take the place of my books because my phone is always pre-loaded with books. I can also listen to music on my phone so this one phone will actually be the equivalent of 3 items….
  2. A Swiss Army Knife: This is a no-brainer! This will check so many boxes for survival that it should probably be number 1.
  3. Pen and Notebooks: Since I will be free of all distractions, this enforced period of boredom should help me flesh out the book that has been inside me for aeons.
  4. A giant pack of matches: To help me light fires. I’ve never been a Guide or Scout, so no idea on how to light fires using flints or stones!
  5. A solar powered flashlight: This would help me see in the dark and also hopefully frighten away any animals at night.
  6. Sunscreen: Skin cancer anyone? Not me!
  7. Lipstick: Because I am vain like that…
  8. Hammock: Deserted islands have plenty of trees and reading while lying on a hammock is absolute bliss. And of course, this eliminates the need to sleep on a hard floor with god alone knows what bugs and insects.
  9. Toothbrush and Toothpaste: I hate a furry mouth, though I’d need to find a freshwater source before I can actually use it. I’ve brushed in salt/brackish water once and it was an experience I do not ever wish to repeat!
  10. Canned food items: Since I am a vegetarian, I can’t depend on ocean’s bounty to feed me so some canned food for me to survive. I will use my Swiss knife to open the cans and my matches to cook anything I need to cook!

What about you? What would you bring with you if you were ever stranded on a deserted and desolate island?

Woohoo…Friday’s here…

It’s the end of another work week and a week closer to my holiday! You must know by now how excited I am about it (I can’t stop talking or rather blogging about it!)

This week has been a mixed bag one with a dash of mommy guilt thrown in for good measure! GG has been pestering me to do something special with her, but other than shopping, which I’ve promised her soon, I can’t think of anything which I will be able to exclude BB. The thing is that I am incapable of doing something with one of them and excluding the other. In fact I am scrupulously fair to the two of them – even if I buy someone something, the other will get something else of the exact same value!

So what are we planning for this weekend? We’re going to take BB & GG to watch Puss in Boots tomorrow morning. I’ve heard many good things about the movie and so will review it later. My only concern is that it’s been rated PG, but hope any fears are unfounded.

Then later, it’s some spring cleaning time (time to clear GG’s closets of the clothes she’s outgrown) and then maybe the library!

See you on the other side of the weekend!

Pinterest: Warning…Serious addiction ahead

I’ve been reading about Pinterest for a few weeks now on various WordPress blogs, but somehow didn’t check it out. When I saw some more references to it today, a whim made me check it out and boy did I rue why I took so long to do so. Pinterest is very simply an online pinboard. You register and share all the beautiful and interesting stuff you find on the internet. At the same time, you can browse other people’s pins where they have shared stuff you may find useful or interesting. I would guess something like this would be very useful to someone planning a wedding or maybe a renovation. Why didn’t this exist almost two years back when I was planning our renovation?

To get started and try out the site while they processed my registration, I decided to check out some pins on the topic of Humour. Some were so funny that I had to literally restrain myself. Here are a few that I really, really liked.

Gonna stop now or I’ll never get anything done today. This site is seriously addictive!
