2015 Week 28 Update

The last week was a short one because of the public holiday for the end of the fasting month!

But the weekend was far from the idyllic one that I envisioned. We didn’t get the magical email which would push BB to the next round at his dream school, which put a damper into everyone’s lives. I was shattered – for some reason I had already envisioned him in the school and now to realise that he’s not going to make it, somehow put me into a complete funk. I was depressed the whole day and at night, went to BB’s room to talk to him and completely lost it! I started crying – something I am not proud of – but if this makes any difference to BB’s mindset for the exams, I’ll take what I can get.

We go into the Prelims orals this week with both languages happening one after the other.

So here’s a nice quote to brighten up your day and another one for the week ahead! Ok, Monday, lets roll!!

PSLE Week 28 Update

We are closing the PSLE Gap! Just about a month to the Orals and slightly more than 2 months to the final written exams!! Btw, BB thinks this is plenty of time. Earlier in the week when we were calculating the time left, he said “There’s more than 75 days to the exams, so much time”! Me and GG just looked at him with mouths agape!

We also got two sad pieces of news this week. Both the schools where BB gave the entrance exams for his DSA rejected him. One of the schools was BB’s dream school and this has hit him quite hard. I am also very disappointed 😢 with the outcome. This weekend is turning out to be a very disappointing one. But, now we need to look ahead to doing well in the exams now.

We also got the full time table for the rest of the year from the school, it’s chock-packed till the end of the PSLE exams. I really need a holiday after all this. I am so looking forward to it, need to book the tickets soon as well as plan my India trip after the results are out…

The Shanghai Union of Industrial Mystics (Feng Shui Detective #4) – Nury Vittachi

Feng shui master C.F. Wong is not what you might call fond of change. The 21st century, with its rush-rush, its chattering technology, it’s fusion-food, that’s all about change. The eternal truths do not change. And yet it is a contemporary truth that Master Wong has left Singapore for Shanghai. Before long a band of crazed vegan terrorists has taken Shanghai hostage. Only Master Wong can save the city, some visiting foreign dignitaries, and an extremely rare white elephant, from the destructive passions of the ferocious tofu-eaters.

Milagu Kozambu (Pepper Sauce)

My Bible and go-to book for everything in traditional Iyer cooking is the “Cook and See (Samaithu Paar)” series by S. Meenakshi Ammal. The series of three book was originally written in the late sixties/early seventies. I refer to them all the time, especially when I want to make traditional food. This book takes the place of calls to my mum, especially since international calls are so expensive!

The recipe I made today is Milagu Kozambu or Pepper Soup as Meenakshi Ammal calls it. I am copying the recipe exactly as it was in the book and I made it also the exact same way it said in the recipe.

Milagu Kozambu

(This recipe prepares 1 cup)

 Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp Peppercorns
  • 6 Red Chillies
  • 1 tsp Black Gram Dal (Urad Dal)
  • 2 tsps Bengal Gram Dal (Chana Dal)
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 2 tsps Coriander Seeds
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • Tamarind as big as a small piece of lime
  • Salt
  • A handful of curry leaves
  • Asafoetida
  • Oil

 Method:

Heat oil in a kadhai and fry peppercorns, red chillies, Bengal gram dal, 1 tsp black gram dal, cumin seeds and coriander seeds. When the dals turn red, add the curry leaves and fry till the curry leaves are crisp. At this point, add the asafoetida. Grind to a smooth paste with the tamarind, salt and a little water. The paste should be very smooth.

Heat oil and fry 1 tsp mustard seeds and 1 tsp black gram dal. Mix the paste with enough water to make 1.5 cups of the paste. Add this to the oil and let it cook on a slow flame till it reduces to 1 cup.

This kozambu will keep for about 2 days outside and about a week in the fridge. Eat with hot rice and some papad. So soul satisfying on a cold or rainy day!

The Feng Shui Detective’s Casebook (Feng Shui Detective #3) – Nury Vittachi

A murder in the Philippines, a kidnapping in Thailand, grand theft auto in Singapore: just another day at the office for CF Wong. No, he’s not a detective, he’s a feng shui master, and he’d much rather just get paid, go home, put his feet up, and leave solving crimes to someone who cares.

But that’s just not going to happen. CF and his assistant, Joyce, are on a business trip around the Asia Pacific and wherever they go, their unique way of getting to the bottom of the most perplexing cases seems to be needed.

Baffling crimes, ingenious schemes, exotic locations and bucket-loads of charm. The Feng Shui Detective’s Casebook is Vittachi at his witty, original best.
