Poem: I am a Reader

As you all know I love books. I am an avid reader, though recently I feel I have not been reading as much as I used to and should do. While thinking about something else to write, I thought of books and this poem came unbidden. Maybe this is my subconscious telling me to read more.

I am a Reader

I am a reader, I live in many worlds
An adventure, romance, crime or thriller
I choose the world I want to go to
What will it be today? What would I choose?

I open the book and settle in with a contented sigh
And soon say to this world a goodbye
As I drown myself in a world full of intrigue and suspense
Heroes full of valour and villains with an air of menace

Or shall I indulge in some heady romance?
Where emotions run deep and the characters rave and rant
Or shall I take a trip to the top of the mountains or the deepest ocean?
Sitting in one place, travelling without a care or caution

I am a reader, there’s a constant movie running in my head
And so when I watch a movie, I am always upset
The film on-screen can never match up to the one in my imagination
I am disappointed yet again, go back to my books and let the magic happen

Books are special, books are magical
With books, there’s never a moment that’s not dull
Books help us know ourselves and let us roam
And all this, from the comfort of our home

So pick up a book and bid now adieu
Let the magic of the written word envelop you
And tell yourself that you too are a reader
An adventurer, a detective, a romantic and most importantly, a dreamer!

Poem: Family

A family is defined as the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children or a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head and having a common ancestry. But a family is so much more than that. They are your biggest supporters, the people who love you unconditionally and under any circumstance. They are there through thick and thin and show up when you need them the most. This poem is a celebration of those ties and the love they have for you.

Family

When you are down, they are there for you
When the stakes are low, they are there to pull you up
When you need to get things done, they are your trusted crew
And they are there to prop you up when you need that pickup

They are your family, your loved ones
Who wouldn’t hesitate to go all out for you with blazing guns
Family, a word that brings automatically brings a smile to the face
The anchor in your life, your secret life’s ace

The foundation on which your values stand strong
The close circle of love to which you and your loved ones belong
The people who know you inside and outside
From whom try as you might, but you can’t hide

So, learn to treasure your family, the memories
The ones who knew you at your worst and your best
With whom you may squabble and quarrel and who may torture and tease,
But you have their love, and with that, you know you are blessed.

Poem: What is Happiness

I was pondering about what makes us happy the other day and this poem was the result of that rumination. Happiness is that feeling that comes over you when you know life is good and you can’t help but smile. It’s the opposite of sadness. Happiness is a sense of well-being, joy, or contentment. When people are successful, or safe, or lucky, they feel happiness.

What is Happiness

What is happiness I ask you?
It is the spark from within which lights up your entire being
It is that essence that fills up and bring a smile so you want to sing

What is happiness I ask you?
It is the joy that springs forth and bubbles
Infecting everyone around with that same joy and chortles

What is happiness I ask you?
It is seeing that same happiness reflected in others
It is looking at someone and wordlessly knowing all the answers

What is happiness I ask you?
It is being content and satisfied
It is living a life in the present and with pride

What is happiness I ask you?
It is being with friends and family
It is being loved unconditionally

What is happiness I ask you?
It is spreading the same joy and happiness everywhere
For happiness is shared, is when you become a happiness billionaire

Poem: Morning Solitude

I love that time in the early morning when I am the only one awake. I use that time to drink my coffee peacefully, plan my day and practice mindfulness. The solitude of that time is so precious to me that I try to wake up at least 30 minutes before the rest of the household even on weekends and holidays! This poem is my take on what solitude means to me.

Morning Solitude

I wake up while the world is still dark
When the world is asleep awake like the lark
The darkness in the room comforting like in midnight
Backlight from the kitchen gently providing some sight

With a hot cup of coffee in my hand
I sit and contemplate my day, planned and unplanned
Think about my day, and plan my weekday
Inspiration strikes me too at this time of the day

Then its time for the favourite part of my morning
It’s time for my daily mindfulness practice
That’s what puts a zing to the morning
And makes my day flawless

And then what I fear daily happens
The rest of the household slowly awakens
People start walking into where I am, quiet as a tomb
Talking and chatting, brightening the room

The solitude I so desperately craved is broken
The peace I was enjoying is shattered
But that’s allright, I think to myself
Tomorrow will come soon enough

And then I will have a new hour of solitude
A new hour to chill and to brood
This daily solitude is super precious
One that I am unwilling to give up without a fuss

Poem: It is Darkest before the Dawn

The world world collectively has been in a depression for about a year now. Everytime we things things are getting better, it becomes worse. But with the world reaching herd immunity and many countries getting their people vaccinated, maybe things will get better. It’s possible we have not yet reached the darkest part of the night yet, when dawn will bring new hope to the world.

It is Darkest before the Dawn

When life throws you a curveball
When all you want to do is curl into a ball

That’s when you remember
It’s always darkest before the dawn

When you are steeped in despair
When all life needs is a prayer

You do realise that things can only get better
Things can only look up, life will be happier

The dawn brings a fresh ray of hope
Which mimics the hope that life gives you

When you hit rock bottom, there is just one way
And that’s the way up, life is not just grey

Get mentally strong, that’s the rule
Then life will not seem to be so cruel

A new day will dawn and things will get better
So much so, we will look back and wonder

Why we despaired and were sad and webegone
It’s so true when they say
It’s the darkest before the dawn
