Poem: The Fear

Source

The other day, I was texting with one of my aunts and she told me that my maternal grandmother who lives with her and another aunt alternately, has been having issues which come with old age.

My grandmother is almost 90 and one of my fears is that she will pass away before I get a chance to meet her one last time. She already has had a heart scare earlier in the year and as my only surviving grandparent, I am scared to lose her.

Another person I am worried about is my dad who turned 75 earlier in the year. He also has some medical issues which we thankfully spotted on time and has been in treatment for the past few years. But to see the once strong man slowly being reduced to being dependent on others, is fairly scary.

This poem is a reflection of my thoughts.

The Fear

I know that when a person gets old
The fear of death starts to take hold
I wonder when the ball will fall
When someone you love will stop and stall

I fear the time when you can’t hear their voice
You can’t see them, smell them, and know that you don’t have a choice
This fear is all encompassing, it takes over your entire being
But this dear also makes you stop living, start crying

That’s the wrong approach to take, life is meant to be lived, not to be in pain
Because death is inevitable, birth and death are two sides of the same coin
Live your life as best as you can, learn to embrace your loved ones
Meet them, speak to them live with them without any fictions

Then when it is time, let them go on their terms
Don’t hold them back, revel in their lives
This is harder than it looks, I know
But learn to go with the flow, to take that blow

For our lives will go on, irrespective of what happens
That’s the circle of life, with birth comes death

The Love Knot – Elizabeth Chadwick

1306847

In the summer of 1140, Oliver Pascal returns home from a long pilgrimage to discover England ravaged by civil war and his family lands forfeit to the conflict between Henry I’s daughter Mathilda, and her cousin Stephen of Blois, who has seized the crown at her expense. Riding to the Earl of Gloucester’s keep at Bristol, Oliver stumbles upon the aftermath of a mercenary attack on an isolated village. Among the survivors are Richard, an illegitimate royal son and half-brother to the Earl himself, and the boy’s young nurse Catrin. Widowed, stubborn and proud, she has much in common with Oliver, a man still grieving for a wife lost in childbirth.

At Bristol, Catrin meets Ethel, a wise woman and midwife, who begins to train her in the healing arts and is instrumental in bringing Oliver and Catrin together as lovers. But the endurance of that love is threatened by the perils of injury in battle, the danger of childbirth, the upheaval of continuing civil war, and the risk of loving in exchange for nothing but heartbreak. In the end, Catrin must decide where her true loyalties lie.

2019 Week 11 Update

Every week these days, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to write this blog post.

It’s a very fine line I am treading between revealing too much and sharing with you all on what is happening with my life.

This week was the usual meh week! I had a couple of events to go to while wearing my freelance hat and those were pretty interesting. This month has a couple more on the cards so this month should be fairly interesting.

After the emotional talk with BB earlier this week, he seems to have turned a corner, but it’s still early days now. I do keep on giving him pep talks so he is not tempted to waste time on his phone and laptop.

GG has been falling sick quite often these days, it’s almost once a month and I am now getting worried about her. I do know it’s the stress of school work plus the competiton they are preparing for which will happen next month that is causing all this sickness.

That’s all from me for this week. Have a wonderful and productive week folks!

2019 Secondary 4 Week 11 Update

This was an emotional week for me. Early in the week, I was so frustated with BB and his inability to do his school work, especially given that this is a crucial year for him, I decided to have a very emotional heart-to-heart talk with him.

I reached out online and found some answers which I used as ammunition to speak with BB. I told him bluntly how his life will turn out to be if he continues in the same vein and shared statistics with him on what kind of income levels he can expect. There was a bit of crying and the offshoot of this session was that he has decided to work hard so he can get into the course of his choice.

This week is the school term break. While BB does not have to go back to school, GG’s school is asking them to come back almost daily, whether for make-up lessons or for CCA practice. She was moaning the other day that holidays is just a misnomer in her case.

Happy Sunday folks and have a wonderful weekend!

Around the World in 50 Years: My Adventure to Every Country on Earth – Albert Podell

22545459

This is the inspiring story of an ordinary guy who achieved two great goals that others had told him were impossible.

First, he set a record for the longest automobile journey ever made around the world, during the course of which he blasted his way out of minefields, survived a serious accident atop the Peak of Death, came within seconds of being lynched in Pakistan, and lost three of the five men who started with him, two to disease, one to the Vietcong.

After that, although it took him forty-seven more years-Albert Podell set another record by going to every country on Earth. He achieved this by surviving riots, revolutions, civil wars, trigger-happy child soldiers, voodoo priests, robbers, pickpockets, corrupt cops, and Cape buffalo. He went around, under, or through every kind of earthquake, cyclone, tsunami, volcanic eruption, snowstorm, and sandstorm that nature threw at him. He ate everything from old camel meat and rats to dung beetles and the brain of a live monkey. And he overcame attacks by crocodiles, hippos, anacondas, giant leeches, flying crabs and several beautiful girlfriends who insisted that he stop this nonsense and marry them.
